In a recent survey conducted by the 10GM VCSE Workforce Development Programme, significant insights were gathered regarding the payroll within Greater Manchester’s Voluntary, Community, and Social Enterprise (VCSE) sector. The survey, which saw participation from 37 organisations, highlighted several critical areas of concern and potential improvement.
Key Findings:
- External Payroll Providers: A substantial 74% of respondents who employ staff use an external payroll provider, with 62% expressing interest in a shared external payroll service.
- Payroll Management: Only 22% of organisations employ a dedicated payroll manager, indicating a reliance on external services or software.
- Support Needs: The top three support needs identified were the need for a dedicated payroll manager, payroll processing, and online payslips and payments.
- Popular Payroll Systems: BrightPay emerged as the most popular payroll system, used by 47% of respondents, followed by Xero (16%) and Sage (11%).
The survey’s findings underscore the need for enhanced payroll support and services within the VCSE sector. In response, 10GM plans to develop recommendations and proposals for a shared payroll service to better support smaller organizations. This initiative aims to streamline payroll processes and improve overall efficiency within the sector.
