Navigating net zero: what should it mean for communities and the third sector?

The UK has a legally binding commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In this talk, Professor Sherilyn MacGregor will give an introduction to net zero policy and what it could (and should) mean for communities and the third sector.

She will discuss why dominant, techno-centric approaches to net zero are poorly equipped to include communities in a meaningful way and therefore risk intensifying inequality and resistance especially in places that feel ‘left behind’ by successive governments. This leads to a discussion of what a people-centred ‘just transition’ means and what needs to happen to ensure that the journey to decarbonisation leaves no communities behind.

This online lecture is delivered as part of Academic Perspectives Lecture series, which aims to link VCFSE practitioners to academic ideas and evidence.

It will combine a 30-minute lecture, and an opportunity to ask questions.
